Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell is a well-researched look at Joni Mitchell's musical life and times. It takes you through the tumultuous 60s and 70s with no punches pulled about her love life, giving up her daughter for adoption struggles with drugs, and her health issues/5(). Reckless Daughter is thoroughly researched, with original interviews with Mitchell as well as friends and collaborators across her life span. But its flaws in craft, tone, and focus leave it short of definitive, and a little maddening to read The book is at its best on Roberta Joan Anderson’s childhood in repressive, rural, postwar Saskatchewan, and her life-altering experience of being.

With Reckless Daughter, he makes a figure as iconic as Joni Mitchell feel wholly new. This portrait is loaded with revelations, both spiritual and actual. I thought I understood something about Mitchell--the way her tough and tender songs move, her sweetness and rebellion--but Yaffe understands everything. What a book."/5(K).   In Reckless Daughter, the music critic David Yaffe tells the remarkable, heart-wrenching story of how the blond girl with the guitar became a superstar of folk music in the s, a key figure in the Laurel Canyon music scene of the s, and the songwriter who spoke resonantly to, and for, audiences across the country.

Reckless Daughter is the story of an artist and an era that have left an indelible mark on American music. APPLE BOOKS REVIEW Decades into his infatuation with Joni Mitchell, David Yaffe gets to know the Canadian superstar quite well through a series of interviews/5(34).   Reckless Daughter: A Joni Mitchell Anthology Hardcover – 3 Nov. by Barney Hoskyns (Author) › Visit Amazon's Barney Hoskyns Page. search results for this author. Great book, but buy the Hardcopy. I loved this book, and though I am and have always been a passionate fan of her music, the story put my passion into overdrive. I learned so many things I didn't know. I frequently stopped the book and went back and re-listened to the songs discussed.

What I did NOT enjoy with was the narration of the book. Those lines kept coming back to me while reading David Yaffe’s engrossing and comprehensive new biography Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell. Yaffe presents Mitchell as always seeking normality and stability but being inevitably drawn to unstable and destructive people (especially men) and chaotic situations.

To me Joni Mitchell was the ever-wistful lady of the Laurel Canyon days, the sprightly voice of “Court and Spark.” Wisps of her songs lit like butterflies on my brain, and fluttered off, and then came another, and another, her fey, frail soprano seemingly chasing one emotion or another in arpeggios.
